How An Internship in China Can Change Your Life - Hutong School Interns In Their Own Words

Since you’re reading this, it means you’ve probably already done some research, or at least have a good idea about the benefits of doing an internship  abroad in China. You know that doing an internship in China looks great on your CV, gets you a foot in the door of a huge and important economy  , and that China is an exciting place to experience great adventures and to see amazing sites. But that’s not the full story. There’s something about doing an internship in China that most web pages you read about this don’t really tell you.  To understand this, you have to hear from the people who’ve come here themselves.

Laura Lee Moreau

“For me, to move abroad, explore and learn from experiences is the best way to grow as a person and potentially as a designer. I decided to go to China without knowing anything about this country, because I knew this was good for me. I knew this would be a positive experience.”

I worked as an intern for a foreign company based in China, doing Web Design. Even just this was a big achievement for me. Imagine! Moving to the other side of the world, all by myself and without knowing anybody… Wow! Furthermore, this company hired me before I even finished my internship, and soon after, I became Art Director, supervising the Design department. We all became friends there, and meeting all these great people was just amazing.

On a personal side, this achievement helped me to grow as a person, and to discover myself more. I became more confident, and left China etched with memories for life. Professionally, this wonderful experience is without any doubt a big plus on my CV. Employers are excited to learn more about my year in China, and it definitely helped me get jobs!

Cecilie Kock

For a long time I had been thinking about studying aboard, but I didn’t quite have the guts to go. Because I have never travelled before so I was very nervous. Then our internship period was coming up and I had to find something. Then my student counselor mentioned Hutong School, that they could help me, and that’s how I came to China.

Personally I changed for the better. I got braver in regards of pursuing what I want and not always let the shyness and nervousness take over. My network got bigger as I met people from all over the world. I met / visited companies while I was in China so I got to know some of them too.

Quentin Collette

 First of all, it changed me. I had the opportunity to live in China for a short period in almost total immersion within the Chinese culture! Basically, it changed and opened my mind. You gain so much by learning another language, way of behaving, thinking, etc. I was also very impressed several times during my stay: China is growing and developing so fast!

Niels Gevers

Being away from home for 3 months meant that I had to learn to take care of myself, my belongings and get used to dealing with unknown situations. I also learned that it is important to be happy with the little things in life and the things that people these days consider normal like seeing children play with each other at a playground or people having a conversation while letting out the dog. If somebody who you don’t know wants to have a chat with you, even if it is only for 5 minutes, and you have the time for it then why shouldn’t you do it?

Laetitia Tay

After the experience I feel more self-secure, because I know that I’m able to live in a country that is pretty different from mine. I also proved myself that I am a really flexible person with an adaptability capacity. This is relevant both in a personal and professional aspect. This experience is extremely valuable for my career (I study business) and will be relevant in my CV. When I will be looking for a job, this will be a point in favor for me.
