Calling all future chefs and dedicated foodies; we have the perfect program for you. Head to China this summer and learn about this age-old culinary culture whilst mastering some of its best dishes. Not only will you taste different Chinese regional specialties and learn to make them yourself during cooking workshops, you’ll learn Chinese, experience working in a Chinese kitchen and discover a whole new side to the Middle Kingdom.
Run in collaboration with Shanghai Polytechnic University Summer School’s Chinese Culture Culinary Program, this program offers participants a truly unique experience. Starting in Beijing, you’ll explore the traditional alleyways, known as hutongs and get a taste of traditional northern Chinese food. Then, you’ll venture west to Xi’an, the former Chinese capital that’s home to the Terracotta Army and a distinct regional cuisine known across the country. Following this, you’ll travel to Shanghai where you’ll settle on SSPU’s campus and explore the full breadth of southern Chinese cuisine.
Throughout the program, you’ll get to fully experience the different flavors and cooking techniques used in different regions of China. You’ll learn about Chinese dining culture by visiting local restaurants and attend several in-depth lectures on topics such as Chinese food production, food history and eating habits. By working with real Chinese chefs you’ll learn the proper techniques and discover what it’s like working in a Chinese kitchen. Immerse yourself in China whilst trying some of the best food the country has to offer!
Sightseeing, Activities & Classes
Between visiting companies and learning about Chinese food and culture, you’ll experience the best Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai have to offer in the safe hands of our experienced team. You’ll visit iconic attractions like the Bund, the Terracotta Army, and take part in a carefully selected range of cultural activities designed to give you a taste of authentic Chinese culture and traditions. These include calligraphy, tai chi and mahjong.
During the Cooking Program, students will attend Chinese language classes at SSPU. Immersing yourself in Chinese culture and learning the language will further enrich your experience.
