Beijing opera, also known as Peking opera, is a form of traditional Chinese theatre which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. The form was extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty court and has come to be regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China.

Costumes in Beijing opera are elaborate and colorful, in contrast to the usually sparse stage. Movements by the actors are symbolic and suggestive, not realistic. Above all else, the skill of the performers is judged by the beauty of their movements.

This Saturday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30, we will be learning about Beijing opera. In the surrounding of our beautiful traditional courtyard you will learn (and try!) how they do their makeup, how to sing some songs, and about the history of Beijing opera.
